Understanding Lock Basics
Before attempting to pick a lock, it's crucial to understand how a basic pin tumbler lock works. This type of lock consists of a cylinder that rotates within a housing, with several pins that must be aligned at the shear line for the lock to turn.
Materials Needed
- 2 bobby pins
- Pliers (optional)
- A practice lock
Preparing Your Tools
Making the Tension Wrench
- Take your first bobby pin and remove the rubber tip
- Bend it into an "L" shape at a 90-degree angle
- Flatten the wavy part of the pin using pliers or your fingers
Creating the Pick
- Remove the rubber tip from the second bobby pin
- Straighten it completely
- Create a small upward bend (about 20 degrees) at the very tip
- Flatten the wavy portion
The Picking Process
Step 1: Insert the Tension Wrench
Place the tension wrench into the bottom of the keyway and apply slight pressure in the direction the key would turn. Maintain steady, gentle pressure throughout the picking process.
Step 2: Insert the Pick
- Insert the pick into the top of the lock, above the tension wrench
- Feel for the pins inside the lock
- The bent tip should be facing upward toward the pins
Step 3: Manipulate the Pins
- Starting from the back, gently push each pin up with the pick
- Maintain steady pressure with the tension wrench
- Listen for small clicks as pins set
- If a pin feels stuck, reduce tension slightly
- Repeat until all pins are set
Step 4: Turn the Lock
Once all the pins are set, the tension wrench should turn the lock open. If the lock doesn't turn, release the tension slightly and try again, as one or more pins may have fallen back into place.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying too much tension
- Using excessive force on the pins
- Rushing the process
- Damaging the lock or tools
Tips for Success
- Patience is Key: Lock picking requires a delicate touch and patience
- Practice: Use transparent practice locks to see pin movements
- Different locks require different amounts of tension
- Keep movements gentle and controlled
- Be patient - it takes time to develop the necessary feel
Legal Considerations
Important: Lock picking should only be practiced on locks you own or have explicit permission to pick. In many jurisdictions, possession of lock picks without proper licensing can be illegal.
